What this means for us...
Bybee's work mostly focuses on the science curriculum. If you are not a science nerd, you may not care, BUT his research will affect all students. Bybee has been on so many different committees and boards for science education and science curriculum that it would take a whole course to explain how all the work he has done in the last forty years. (He is now one of my science heroes!)
Bybees most notable contribution that affects our curriculum is the design of the 5 E lesson. This is a lesson style that takes into account they way that we learn science best, with inquiry! In this style, students pose questions about a natural phenomena and research what is occurring to learn. The 5 E instructional model has been used to develop students’ abilities and skills associated with scientific inquiry. Because the 5 E model is still relativity new compared to other designs, not much research has been conducted on it. I do use it in my classroom, and can say it is wonderful in getting students to become independent thinkers, risk takers, and great inquirers.
Below, you will find a chart that explains each step in the 5 E lesson plan cycle. This chart is from The BSCS 5E Instructional Model and 21ST Century Skills by Rodger W. Bybee. (http://itsisu.concord.org/share/Bybee_21st_Century_Paper.pdf)
